Symbols in SMS: Not working?

I have tried sending symbols such as upside down question marks and exclamation points to other non-Droid users only to get back a message from the friend that a blank message was sent. What gives?

No. They have Verizon, just not the Droid.

I just sent a text to my brother who doesn't have Verizon and I put symbols in it and asked him if he saw them. He said yes. I'm using handcent.

I think it depends on their phone. Seems like if you use symbols that're on the keyboard when you press alt, some people can't get them...
