Sync Droid Contacts to GMail Contacts

Good afternoon, when I add a new contact to my phone I thought that by going to accounts/sync it would port/sync the new contact information up to my GMail account contacts. I added a contact the other day did a Droid sync, logged into my GMail account and do not see the data there. Does it not happen that way or what am I missing/doing wrong.
