telephone dialer issues

When I am making a call and remove the phone from my ear to hang up or plug in a code or prompt, the dialer stay on for 2 seconds then goes dark...is there a way to control that? It is a pain to try and do stuff in such a short time. thx in advance

Try holding it straight up, it uses proximity to know when to turn the screen off.
