Testing Components for Water Damage

So I posted this morning about an accident that may have water damaged my Motorola Droid, and/or its battery. Since my wife and I got the 2 for 1, I still have a Droid and battery functioning perfectly well. I'd like to isolate cause of the damage (e.g. battery, phone, or both), but what I want to avoid at all costs is making things worse. So here are my questions:

1) Can I damage a working Droid by inserting a battery that has sustained water damage?
2) Can I damage a working battery by inserting it into a Droid that has been water damaged?

If anyone has a definitive answer on this I would appreciate it.
