For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to have a downloaded sound/song be my text message alert. All I can get it to be is my ringtone, but i want it to be my text message alert sound.
Any help?

You have to go into the messaging app and go to settings, then notifications, and then find notification ringtone or something like that, and set it there.

but i only can choose from the pre-set sounds from Droid.....i want my downloaded sounds

What I had to do is....
Access the SD Card, create a folder called "Media"

Within the folder, create the following folders: Ringtones, Notifications, and Alarm

You'll have to save all tones you want as text messages under the notifications. Than it'll give you that option as a ringtone when you set up your text msg notification ring tone.

There's an APP you can download to access your SD card where you can create, edit, cut/paste, etc. files/folders

its dumb because i had it figured out.....but then i started messing around with other things and must have reset my sounds somehow. none of my downloaded sounds/songs are on the list of tones to choose from on my alert sounds

I have a rooted Droid 1 and use Handcent. I can't remember to exact steps but I believe when I open Handcent and tap menu, tap notifications I can select from the stock notifications or for my custom, music.

I will be glad to try and help. If I'm reading correctly, you been able to move the ringtone to your phone and at one point could access. Now, you can not. Lets make sure that the songs are on the SD card. You are not rooted so to look at you SD card you need to download Astro File Manager (free in Market) or mount you phone to your computer. Then find the folder (Media?) that you moved your music or ringtones to. Let me know what you find.

mwhartman - i would like to thank you first for taking time to help me out. i have the songs on my phone and can set them as my ringtone. the problem i am having is selecting them as my notification sound. when i go to notification sounds in settings, the only sounds i can choose from is the default ones on my droid

Thanks for the clarification. I have a rooted Droid 1 so my settings my be different. What app are you using for texting.

OK in my stock txt app when I open and tap menu, tap settings, under the Notification settings I see Notifications, Select ringtone, vibrate. If I tap select ringtone a new window opens and I can select Android System or Select Music.

what does you text settings say?
