Text notification tone mute

I can't find a way to mute a notification tone for text messages by hitting a button on the outside of the phone. The only way I can do it is to wake the screen and unlock the phone to get to the main screen. I am just trying to find a quick way to do this. Thanks for any and all help.

Do you want to silence it perminately or just once?

Try setting your notification ringtone to silent under settings>sounds & display

I have the same issue with my verizon Droid only for notifications though, my phone ringer will mute by pressing the volume button on the side of the phone, but any notifcation rings for calendar, text, etc will not allow this capability. I didn't see an answer on this thread, I posted a new thread as well, please help...

I'm bumping every tread I can find on this subject... there has to be a solution... There has to be a way to silent an incoming notification with one touch of an external button... If i'm having a conversation with sombody I don't want to have to take my phone out of my pocket to silence my text song...
