If you download a third party messaging app like go SMS or handcent from the market they have the option to do so. I believe SMS pop up also does if you still want to use the stock messaging app.

I was personally shocked to learn that Android was missing this feature since even iOS has this ability now. Thank goodness for third-party apps! Handcent has been really fun to use with an unbelievable level of customization for SMS.

I had the Motorola og1 with android 2.0 Iirc, and I have always been able to assign different tones to contacts. I can also do this with my current HTC dinc

Peace,

Ringo Lite (free) works good with the stock messaging and phone ringer.

You can set each contact's sms &phone to separate tones.

I used Hancent on my D2G and loved it. Then I was shown Go sms. Wow then go launcher, go locker, and others. Never used anything like it. Looks awesome on the maxx!!!
