THE OFFICIAL will / won't leaked ICS 'kick you off the upgrade path' THREAD!

Hey everyone, haven't been posting but I've been lurking believe me...
And keeping in touch by proxy with Kwyrt.

Yes I know, we will not know FOR SURE if the leaked ICS will or won't kick you off the upgrade path until the ICS OTA comes out, but let this thread be a discussion for all arguments, speculation, facts, or experience with the leak and being kicked off / not kicked off.

It has been tempting to flash the leak for me personally, and the only thing stopping me is the possibility of being kicked off...
So do you think it will? won't? do you have prof for or against it?

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure this leak will kick you off the path. That doesn't mean you can't get back on. I was hesitant to flash the leak until I read this thread here:

It explains why the official OTA update will most likely check to see if you're on the .219 GB motoblur. Flashing this leak will make it impossible to fastboot back to GB entirely, but using the above thread it seems likely that users on the leaked ICS will be able to upgrade to the official release and be right back on the official OTA path.

So using this leak will leave you in a (hopefully) temporary state of manual upgrades. Personally, even if I'm never on the official upgrade path for the rest of my Droid 4 career, that's fine. I love flashing things and developing, and I'm on XDA, DroidForums, Rootzwiki, etc, several times a day, everyday.

tl;dr:
Leak will leave you off the path, most likely able to get back on the path.

From what I have gathered mostly from piecing together is motorola and Verizon are happy people are on the leak it gives them a giant test group before the official release. Otherwise there would never be a point in letting a leak out. So you could assume that once the official comes out there will be a way to get back to where you need to be.

If the bionic is any evidence of what we have learned to do with the fast boot xmls than I have no doubt that we will be able to get back on the upgrade path. Their is already a way to fix a botched ics install with the only problem being loss of root, by editing the. 219 fast boot file and throwing some of the leaked parts (cdt.bin, ect, ect.). Once the official ics fast boot files are leaked then it will be just a matter of time.

Am I missing something or am I the only one not concerned with being kicked off the upgrade path? With all these talented and knowledgeable developers here, I'm perfectly happy with custom ROM's.

I'm still fairly new to this so I might be missing some key piece of knowledge. I'd love for someone to let me know why there's so much concern.

Im not concerned about it. If I have to call Verizon for a new phone I will lmao.

Exactly. Its not our fault VZW/Moto designed the phone to brick itself if you try to install the wrong Motorola software update.

If HP sold a laptop that would brick itself if you tried to install a different OS on it no one would buy it. We should have the same standards for handheld PCs. Hopefully when VZW LTE coverage is wide enough we will start to see some un-locked and *un-branded* LTE devices. Network is open right?

The Razr leak kicked people off the upgrade path, is what my buddy kwyrt told me when this leak first came out...
Did those people eventually find a way back?
Or are they still stuck off the path?

We won't know until the official OTA comes out in the next week or two (I'm speaking about the Razr).

They are probably still stuck off but the only reason im not concerned is like I said above if I have to get a new one from Verizon, I will, but also if the 206 leak isn't the update from Verizon somebody will pull the update file for all of us to flash lol.

If .206 users can update to .208 using the method for updating .200 to .206........it should be safe to assume updating to the official version will be possible using the same method.

One thing to consider... If you get bumped off the upgrade path, every time you pick up your phone, you will have to clear the "New upgrade available" notification off your phone before you can even use it. It will let you DL it and it will "install" (not), but return a "Install failed" message... This is why I started my life of Rooting to begin with, after buying a D4 that had been "restored" without me knowing it. Advice from the noob: If you are ok with what you have now, wait until the next OTA comes out and see how the rest of the brave hearts fair first.

I really don't think it will prompt you to upgrade, because if it did then there would be an upgrade package available for you... That's the whole point of this thread. None of us think there will be an official upgrade path from ICS leaks to ICS full. I am hoping we can leverage safestrap and re-flash /system with an old GB leak and have it patch though, but I'm not sure...
