Transferring from bad DX to good DX

My original DX proved to be defective (intermittent bad screen.) Replacement arrived today (sans battery and cover.) Instructions suggest that I need to download 'backup assist.' Why? I haven't put anything on my SD card, and the only 'data' are my gmail contacts, which are also out in the cloud somewhere. Do I really need to do this? TIA

No. Not at all, if your contacts are in gmail that's your back up.
