Trouble mounting brand new SD Memory Card.

I have a Droid I, and I am trying to mount a brand new sd memory card into my phone. I followed the necessary steps of dismounting the old card and powering off. When I put the new card in, the phone gives me a message saying "Preparing SD Card (checking for errors)". I let my phone sit for about an hour now, and is still saying the same thing. When I try to go to the settings and mount the SD card, the 'MOUNT CARD' command is grayed out, and cannot be clicked, and the phone is showing no card in memory. Please help!!! Thanks!!
