Trying to get video files off my HTC 6500 LVW

Hello,
I am a MacBook user. I plugged the USB cable into my phone and then to my laptop. I don't see anything. Neither on the desktop nor on the phone.
Am I missing something? How does one transer photos and videos off the phone to a computer?

Many thanks in advance! I am a Video Editing trainer and would like to see how the HTC stuff looks when edited.

There should be an option on the phone when connected via USB to mount USB Mass Storage or MTP.
