Tv out not displaying full screen

So i have the cable to allow my incredible to output to a tv but i noticed that when i play a movie from netflix, it doesn't fill up the entire screen. And what's even worse is that there are two black and white screens on either side of the actual viewing portion which is really annoying. Is there a way to make it fill up my widescreen tv or at least get rid of the two black and white adjacent screens?
