Google has just announced a change to the appearance of the Google Play app icons. This will be specifically for the Play Store, Play Movies, Play Music, Play Games, Play Books, and Play Newsstand. The changes to the icons will give them a more unified look. These icons scream PLAY STORE! The new look reminds me of icon masks. Basically the icons are wrapped in a colorful Play button.

You have to wonder why Google didn't do this before. The older apps are kind of vague. You kind of have to guess what they are as it just isn't obvious. The new icons make it pretty obvious that these are place to go and buy content from google.

I don't particularly care for these. The Games one is about the only one that kinda makes sense to me. I like headphones for music and I prefer the larger square film and book for Movies and Books.

Hopefully they'll grow on me, but I know I'm not going to like it when I first get them.

I agree. These icons are too bland. So now instead of headphones, I'll have a triangle with a music note? Dumb.

They only thing they scream is "disable" me...;)
Though I can see why they changed the design to remove the background. Everyone else has done that by now, at least the ones I use.

Remove the background? They added a triangle background to all of them.

I still don't get the whole play concept. Would have been more relevant to name things Google store, Google books, Google games, Google music, Google newsstand, Google videos.

I was fine with Android Market for the apps & such. I think the theory was that Play sounded more entertaining when they moved into more entertainment content, but I'd rather it still be the Android Market, then call everything else Google "blank" like you said.

I agree also. Used to really like the Market. It was simple and the icons were always great.

Has anyone actually seen these new icons on their phone yet?

Nope

Nope. I'm not sure it's actually rolling out yet. Think the changes have just been announced. I could be wrong though.

I have a new play movies and play games icon. Google music was not touched.
