update failing to install causing phone to constantly reboot

Gf's T-bolt has a maintenance update. The update download but fails on the installation. When it reboots I get the screen with the blue droid and a triangle with an exclamation point. I can pull the battery and the phone will boot like it is supposed to, but in just a few seconds the phone powers down and tries to install the update and goes back to the blue droid screen I mentioned above.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I am wondering if a factory reset will help. Her phone is rooted. If I reset from clockwork recovery. I can keep root but how do I stop the update from trying to install?
