Upgrade and unlimited data question

I have a Droid X, which has been my favorite phone ever. I want to upgrade to Droid Razr Maxx HD. When I got my Droid X I grandfathered in with unlimited data, which I obviously dont want to lose. A year or so ago I was on the phone with Verizon tech support and the guy told me I could use my upgrade on one of the other two phones on my plan (which are just "dumb phones") and just activate the new phone on my #, and not lose the unlimited data. So just now I started to order the maxx hd using one of the "dumb phone" lines. It had me to select a monthly data plan, so I stopped right there and didnt order it. My question is, can I order the Maxx hd on the "dumb phone" line and just activate it on my data line when I receive it and still retain unlimited data?

-You upgrade a basic phone to a RAZR HD MAXX and a data plan.

-Change the line back to a basic phone.

-Drop data package.

-Activate RAZR HD MAXX on your primary line.

-Pay the line fee for the basic phone's new contract for 2 years.
