USB will NOT stay connected!

This is super frustrating - when connecting my Droid to my PC via USB, it is CONSTANTLY disconnecting/reconnecting. And it loves to do this when I'm trying to transfer files. I hear the USB disconnect and reconnect sounds at least once every 10 seconds, sometimes in very rapid succession. I cannot transfer anything anymore, and it's driving me insane. I have 6 USB ports, and all have the same results. None of my other USB devices have this problem.

Just curious.
Are you plugging in directly to your computer or are you using a hub. If a hub, is it powered or passive ?
I plug into a powered USB hub and never have disconnects. Just wondering if it makes a difference.

Try plugging it into another computer and see if the problem follows the phone or not. Then swap cables, ports, etc... Divide and conquer.

1. Call VZW and tell them your phone won't charge because the port is loose
2. Hear them tell you "we'll send you a new one"
3. Relax and enjoy

As a poster below mentioned, this is a fairly common problem. My Droid will only stay mounted for 15 seconds before disconnecting, and then i get "Please insert disk' or something like that. I'm running Vista.

The rest of my phone is great (sound quality, reception, battery life, headphones, GPS), so I don't want to replace it over this and end up getting a phone with other issues. I'm waiting for a good wireless solution to transfer files back and forth. I've got Classic FTP on my laptop and some utility whose name escapes me on my Droid, but that method is slooooow.

Curious - have there also been problems with the USB port such as those being reported with the audio jack? mike

Although I disagree with your "common problem" statement, there are a few people that have had this issue. Typically it is either a connector or the cord causing the issue. Definitely try a different usb cable and port. If another pc is available try it. I have not had this issue once on the Droid but did have it on my Seagate Free Agent go drive. Swapped usb cables and it stopped.

If it is the droids usb port, then you should swap it out right away. Yes, there is a slim chance your new Droid will not be as good as your current, but you will run into a lot more issues if you don't swap it out including charging.

I haven't gone into the store and try. I also have a docking station and it came with a cable also. Just haven't had a need for a second one. I suppose I ought to though. You never know when I might need it.

Cleaner is better

I was having the same problem. I used a contact cleaner/lubricant on both ends of the cable and all seems to be working well now.dancedroid
