Use Fascinate w/out Data Plan?

Newbie here. I was given a new Verizon Fascinate by a friend -- he won it in a drawing, and is AT&T\iPhone all the way. It's my first smartphone, so I don't currently have a Verizon data plan, and at this time don't really want to commit to a data plan. My question is: Can the Fascinate be configured to work without a data plan? In other words, I would use it as a cell phone, media player, etc., but with Wi-Fi internet access only. I'd guess this can't be done, but wanted to ask the experienced Droid users.

Nope unfortunately you need a data plan. you can get the $15/month plan for 150 mb I think...

Actually, if it is like the D1, you can use it as a wifi device only.... You can go online, use the market and everything else that requires wifi but you will not be able to make calls or send texts...
