On Thursday, Verizon spokesman Chuck Hamby re-confirmed Verizon's plan to shutdown their 2G CDMA network by the end of 2019. Hamby made it clear that Verizon plans to migrate their customers off the old network as smoothly as possible.
Hamby clarified,
“We put a goal out there, that’s our goal. Having said that, we’re not going to abandon anybody. It’s not hard to imagine there might be stragglers, that for some folks it might be more difficult to transition, but we’re not going to abandon any customers.”
He added,
“We’re realists and we want to assure our customers that Verizon stands behind them. We’re going to use it for what best serves our customers."
Hamby did not clarify any of the details of this migration away from their 2G CDMA service.
To be clear, Verizon is not the first big carrier to share plans to shutdown their 2G network. In April, AT&T indicated the work on shutting down their 2G network was progressing quickly. AT&T intends to decommission their 2G network by the end of this year (2016).
