Version Confusion - Message about 2.3.34 OTA

I have a rooted Droid X, happy with it.

In the settings | about phone, it says I have Android version 2.2, but the system version is 2.3.15.MB810.Verizon.en.US

Am I missing something or why do these guys use Android 2.2 but system 2.3?

Also, any reason NOT to let it do the update? It apparently will continue to nag me until I do.

android 2.2 is froyo, 2.3.15 is froyo, it's the same thing, 2.3.340 is the newest update, but still froyo, not gingerbread yet
