Video Downloads

Okay, so when click on a download link for a video, of any format, and in any browser, instead of starting to download it, I get a pop-up asking which video player I would like to play it with, and then proceeds to stream the video. However, I would rather download it. What's going on here?

UPDATE: After trying a few more types of formats, I found that I was able to download .flv files. So I'm assuming if the video player can read them, they get streamed instead of downloaded. My question now is can I bypass the default streaming option and download .mp4 files and other common video types.
