Visible Notifications For Texts and Email Like iPhone (not in status bar)

I"m wondering if there's a way to set a notification to appear on the actual icon on the screen like on the iPhone and Blackberry. I don't like the status bar notification too much.

LauncherPro also has this capability, as long as your text or email shortcut is in your launcher "taskbar" and the setting is turned on

You can also install handcent. It is a fully customizable messaging application that I use on all my droids
