Am I correct in understanding that you can not make "hands free" calls from a bluetooth w/ a droid ? Seems like a serious oversight. Also voice dialer seems to lack functionality. Am I wrong?

There are lots of posts spread over a variety of droid/android sites and in all of my research and experiments, there is no way to initiate a hands free call with a bluetooth earpiece. You can answer and end a call and perhaps redial the last number but unless you perform a keypress or touch first you cannot make a call. I've read that maybe this will be addressed in a future update. The only time I consider this deficiency a real problem is, of course, while driving. The best workaround is to use a direct call widget on your home page.

It's even difficult to get the phone to voice dial without having to confirm the number you intend to dial. Have fun...

Droid does some cool and amazing things. Yet it does not do some basic stuff that has been stock on most phones for years. Should status quo been the starting point? It makes you think the Google developers were marooned in a 1977 LOST flashback/flashforward/sideways combo reality

hands free dialing

It's very disappointing that the Droid has such a poor hands-free dialing apps. I can't get any of them to work worth a damn.

Yes this is a big oversight and one Google would be wise to correct sooner rather than later, LOL.

For those annoyed at having to confirm on screen before it will dial, trying using the voice search instead (long press on the magnifying glass soft key or run it from the widget or app drawer). This one will offer on-screen confirmation of the match, but will dial automatically if you don't tap the confirm dialog on screen.

On the voice dial, no matter how i say it, be it "call <contact> at <location>" it only ever gets the contact and then I have to choose on screen the right location be it home, cell, work, etc. If it does match outright, for example the contact only has one number listed, it still will NOT dial automatically.

The voice search though, will dial if it finds the match outright. Just wait for the confirm dial or try again prompt to time out.

There is a way to do hands free voice calling. The Blue Ant Q1 will make hands free calling from the Droid, the only problem is you are limited to 8 contacts. Still, it's not impossible to do if you have the right equipment.

Voice Dialer HF, in the market as a paid app works better for me than the built in voice dialer. Try it for 24 hours and if it doesn't work out for you just return it. you can use it to open apps as well as make calls.

It does not allow for bluetooth handsfree voice dialing but does work better for me with voice dialing.
