It's an extra layer of encryption, which really isn't necessary on a CDMA network but people like to feel more secure. With that said, it doesn't degrade call quality at all so it doesn't hurt anything to leave it on.
A Google search seems to confirm the last poster's answer. I always thought it was an attempt to filter out background noise in the mic so you could technically talk softer and not have to talk over the other noise. Shows what I know.
When I Googled it waiting fo a reply, got something that led me back to this forum which Kevsauce said was an attempt to filter out background noise using the second mic on the top of the phone. Now I am confused
