Voice Recorder default app - formats?

A voice recorder app was already on my Droid Incredible when I received it. I use it sometimes for messaging but there are times when the person I'm sending the voice recording to can't hear it because their phone won't play it. Then there are times when they can. The voice recorded on my phone can output a file as both a .qcp or .amr but I don't know when or why it chooses one over the other. Any tech folks have words on this? Is there a better voice recorder to use that can record in a format that's more widely accepted by all phones?

I record in MP3 format then anyone can open it
I use a free program called rehearsal assistant, very nice program
