voicemail number not working anymore?

i recently changed my voicemail number from the default *86 to just 1, but it doesn't seem to be working at all. i can't access my voicemail -- i just keep getting "your voicemail cannot be reached at this time." what's wrong? what can i do? i just can't figure it out...

By changing the number your phone dials to get to your voice mail, you're basically calling '1.' You've got to keep it as *86 to be able to dial your voice mail properly.

I find the quickest way to dial my voice mail is clicking on the Phone app then clicking on the voice mail symbol at the bottom/left of the dial pad screen.
