i was having trouble getting my VPN connection to work on the Thunderbolt. after reading posts on the web for other Verizon phones, it seems the issue is with the 4G LTE. switching over to 3G allowed me to VPN. if you do not know how to switch to 3G, the info is as follows:
dial *#*#4636#*#* a screen will pop up, choose Phone information.
then scroll down and change
CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto to CDMA auto (PRL)
it may take a minute or so for 3G to show up. you can now VPN and changing the parameters back will restore 4G.
