my Moto Droid is not working, but missed both early upgrade AND moto company warranty.

At this point, what makes most $ sense is to terminate that contract, and start all over again with a brand new VZ contract, maybe from a 3rd party supplier.

Is that possible? Someone said that will mean a 90 day hold on my application because of the early termination.

Was offered an special early upgrade, BUT it means I have to buy the phone from the carrier.

I don't want to be without phone service completely. I know I'd lose the old phone number, but that's OK because I've been using my GB number mostly anyhow.

Can I terminate and immediately open a new account with VZ?

I suppose you could.

I don't remember if the early termination fee remains the same throughout the whole contract or if it steadily decreases throughout the contract.

It does decrease. But one 3rd party salesperson said that VZ locks you out of getting a new contract for 90 days after you terminate. That's what I mean by "penalty."

Why not call VZW and ask? Unless some one here works for VZW I suppose it will be mostly speculation. If it means more money in VZW pocket, I cant see why they wouldnt be willing to work with you some how.

On a side note, what makes you think you cant still use your upgrade? Now granted I just came over from ATT but I have never heard of some one waiting to long to use there upgrade. It is money in VZW pocket, which at the end of the day, is the bottom line of any company, plus they get you under contract so you cant jump ship to another carrier with out paying out the kazoo for it making them even more money.

+1

Verizon likes to keep people happy, give them a call and see if they will work with you.

Oh, I can use the upgrade, but not for the special deals from the 3rd party peeps, like Wirefly, Amazon, Bestbuy, etc. The upgrade permission is in my file as a special dispensation from management, and 3rd party people say they can't take advantage of it.

So, to get the phone I want at the price I want , e.g. from a 3rd party, I need to start with a new contract.

VZ wants to make their cut of the phone cost, not just keep my business, apparently. So the early upgrade only applies if I buy phone from VZ.

Did you hear this directly from Verizon? On the phone? Usually Verizon will match third party deals.

Directly from Verizon on the phone, from more than one rep.

My experience is that rather than match 3rd party, if the 3rd party price is lower, and VZ finds out, the next time you look that deal will be gone, 3rd party price will go up. Had that happen already once recently.

I need to correct that -- it's the 3rd party sellers who say they are not allowed to honor the "special early upgrade" note in my account file.

So that's why it seems a lot easier and certainly cheaper to just jetison the current contract and pay the ETF, and start over again. But if that means I'm without a phone for an extended period of time, need to change course.

All you can do is share your experience. I personally have only dealt with Amazon on a third party basis, but from what I've read from others here Verizon does match their offers.

Not disagreeing with you at all, just letting you know what I've seen in the past.

Just tried with Amazon using upgrade -- and upgrade eligibility did not go through.

I may try ringing them to check again.

Just got off phone with Amazon who said they can't start a new contract for me unless I've been without VZ service for 30 days [Best Buy said 90] AND they can't honor the upgrade note in my VZ file.

Is it worth trying again to ask Amazon to ring up VZ?

What are you trying to get.

OK, tried again, but no go. Amazon can't sell me upgrade unless it's in the VZ system, and can't sell me a new contract until I'm "dropped out of" the VZ system for old contract, approx 30 days.

So, guess I have to buy at VZ's prices, for now.
