Wallpaper photos and cropping issue

So when you try and make a photo you've taken into a wallpaper, it makes you crop it then ultimately stretches the hell out of it on the main screen and looks terrible..question is, anyway to create wallpaper without cropping it?

I just create a blank 960*800 image in photoshop, copy my image onto it, move/resize it to my liking, then put it back on the phone.

That might sound like a somewhat involved process, but it really is something that you could knock out in 1-2 min.
