Warning: N00B Question: what exactly are themes?

I understand what rooting and ROM's are, but what exactly is theming, and is it safe and easy? I am extremely skeptic to root my phone because I do not want any harm to come to it. Love my DX, no homo. Thanks!

The way I understand everything and I am a noob as well .... Theme is just for appearance and stuff. Like a paint job.

Roms are mods. Like making it go faster and do stuff that it normally wouldn't be doing.

once you learn how to make and work with them....they are a pain in the a$$ is exactly what they are....lol....
