While Wayward Souls is quite a tough game, I found it very enjoyable because the sense of accomplishment feels well deserved. It certainly gets grindy, but stays just fresh enough to not become tedious.
It could use some balancing, higher levels don't seem to give as much return on gold, and the lack of healing items make it feel like a war of attrition. But I thoroughly enjoy the task of clever maneuvers in combat, and this game requires nimble fingers and quick thinking.
I suspect that some wont agree with me, but I thought it was well worth it.
