What do the colors indicate 1st column of threads

What do the colors indicate 1st column of threads indicate? Those "mail" icons. Some are orange, some are red, some are black.

Latest, hottest, most viewed? I think there's a glitch. The 3 categories appear but not the colored icons.

I didn't notice that. I'll link this thread to the admins and i'm sure they will get it fixed and squared away in no time
