What does it mean to ''root'' phone - pro's and con's please - and how to's :)

From a newbie's perspective - what exactly does it mean to ''root'' the droid phone - what exactly does it to - benefits - etc..... In layman's terms please - haven't quite gotten the lingo here yet

Does it void the contract also??

As you can see - I just can't figure this out - and after reading ALOT of stuff here - still confuseled

Root is like giving you adminstrative rights to your phone. yes it does void warrenty but it can be reversed

adv are overclocking/custom roms/wifi tether just to name a few

dis adv are voids warrenty if caught all rooted apps come with the understanding that if you fry your droid not there fault.. which means they are doing something phone was not designed to do.

i am rooted i would reccomend you do more research before you hop into it..
