What does this icon mean!

A friend of mine just send me a photo of an icon that is now showing up in their notification bar. It appears on the right hand side near the wireless symbol. I do not have their phone in hand and have never seen this to my knowledge. Any help appreciated.

Ahh thanks, their phone does have NFC where mine does not. They were worried of it being something bad but I assured them it's probably something simple.
