What is "keep awake" under battery stats?

So my screen is the #1 battery killer, with Android OS #2 - when I click on Android OS, I see the attached screen... what is "keep awake" ? My battery life is kinda poor even on 3G only, so I'm trying to nail down what's eating away at it.

thanks - will definitely check that out
I didn't run 4.0.1 for more than 15 minutes, I literally had the update about 10 minutes after activating it. Seems the update may be the culprit from what I skimmed over that thread. If that's the case I hope Google is working on a fix. OS 4.1 was spotted couple weeks ago I think...maybe that update will be out for us soon.

How you liking the phone jnt?

Interesting thread over at XDA, haven't finished it yet, but sounds hopeful that it's a fixable problem anyway.

I like it a lot - a few qualms with it...
  1. Battery life :)
  2. RGBG Pentile... screen is beautiful, but with auto brightness in a well lit room (let alone outside) it wears on me. That's most likely a subjective thing to my eyes, but it does look really nice over all. Maybe auto brightness needs to be tweaked? I'm sure there's something out there that can do that, I just haven't looked into it
  3. Data connectivity... though much improved over yesterday, and not completely unexpected with Verizon's LTE network!
It's just barely on the edge of too big, but slim/ergonomic enough to make up for it.

How are you liking it?

edit: oh, forgot to mention, I was like you... I updated to 4.0.2 within a few minutes of activating, so no frame of reference vs. .0.1

This is getting ridiculous... tempted to flash factory image and see if that helps. I've changed nothing but moving from my office to home.

Go to all apps under manage applications and force stop the following: calendar storage (unless you use the calendar, I don't), market, maps, and search applications provider. Those usually wakelock for no real reason. If you feel daring, freeze search applications provider. It breaks Google search to a degree but it should make a difference in battery life.

Unfortunately I do use the calendar, and Google search quite a bit... but I might try it just to test out.

Had full charge before I went to bed and left it unplugged with all apps closed. Even did a restart before going to bed. Huge drop in battery life for this many hours completely idle. I had received a text, email, and words with friends notification. Android os use is killing this thing. Also running a live wallpaper, phase beam, but since the screen is off it shouldn't matter right?

I flashed the 4.0.2 factory image last night to start from scratch... getting much better results today. Still not great, but a definite improvement... Android OS still using too much, but it's a step... this is mostly on wifi, with a couple hours on 4G - and a LOT of usage since I got up this morning.

Dezy mine was like that yesterday too - uber-high... :(

Also someone in that XDA thread posted using a different battery seemed to make a big difference in Android OS' "keep awake" usage... weird.
