What is rooting and why is it needed?

HI folks,

I use my Eris Droid for mostly mail, texting, GPS, virtual Bible, research, photos, news, Skype, etc. i.e., the basic stuff.

1. Soooooo. . . what is rooting and would it enhance any of the apps I use now?

At 68, I've have a lot of (computer) years using major Office, business and photo editing programs, but I've never felt comfortable with system mods, which I assume this is.

2. Also; does anyone know the status of Vlingo for Droid? I've quite a bit of hand movement, so speaking a contact would be a lot easier than touching a screen

3. What does Layar do?

4. How do I set a new homepage?

1. I'm not being rude, this is the title of the thread. It's meant for the MotoDroid but I guess you could apply it to Eris too. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/632-what-root-means-stop-asking.html

2. Well, with a Moto Droid we have speech to text built in. Eris Doesn't do that?

3 and 4. No answers for that.

Maybe somebody with an Eris can give you more specific details, but the first item will keep you busy for a while.

rooting means getting into the root of your phone so that you can modify things to your personal liking. looking at the apps you use i don't think it would enhance your overall experience very much unless you want to change the appearance of your droid. i.e. change the notification bar from white to black, change the font, etc.

layers gives you a different view. if you click on satellite it lets you see it as if you were THERE...as if you were in an airplane or something

4. How do I set a new homepage?

if you're using the stock browser...go to the page you want and hit menu>>>settings...a box will pop up with the option of making the current page your home page.
