What would cause my Droid to look like this??

Last night 3/4 of my screen starting doing this, the buttons are still functional, I just can't see anything..nothing helps and I've tried everything! I haven't dropped my phone at all, I have no idea why its doing this. I went to the Verizon store today, the guy couldn't tell me anything and just said I needed a new phone. I wanted them to replace it, but due do a (microscopic) scratch on the side they won't..I have to go through insurance. Can someone please tell me whats even wrong with it so i can see if the problem can be fixed for cheaper than getting a brand new phone!

Never seen anything like that before. Hate to say it but I think a new phones your only option. I think you happen to get a lemon and something in the display has broken.

When you reboot do you see the same situation? The M logo tearing and the bootanimation tearing?

I would imagine you do, but if you don't it might need a factory reset or an sbf.

If M logo and such are tearing, it is probably the digitizer, which you can replace if you are handy with soldering and taking phones apart. Otherwise, a new phone is in order.

Yeah the screen splits the second I turn it on...is there anywhere I could take it to get fixed do you think? Verizon won't do anything at all, and they want to send me a new (more like referbed) phone for $100..I really rather not have to pay that considering haven't done anything to the phone :icon_ nono2: I've barely had this phone over a month.

Not that I know of.

Probably less expensive to just get a well cared for Droid 1 on swappa.com

ahh ok...I did notice while doing some looking around that when the droid Xs launched there was a lot of them that did the same thing my does, don't know if there's any connection there..but I'll try the verizon store one more time (a different one, the last one just blew me off) if they say the same thing then I might just have to pay for the replacement, I love my D2.

Hopefully that'll work...has anyone else had a problem getting their phone replaced (under warranty) do to an extremely small scratch??

That's likely a hardware failure and probably couldn't be fixed through SBF. How long have you had your D2? VZW has their own 30-day replacement period, but the D2 itself should have a 1 year warranty from Motorola - if it dies in that period, you should get a replacement device through VZW at no charge (though it will be a "factory refurbished" one, not a new one). Any VZW store should help you out.

I went through 4 enV Touches that way, and usually the replacements they sent showed signs of use but no significant damage/scratches. I crashed my bike a few months back and my D2 flew out of its holster (scared the hell out of me) and went chattering across the concrete. Miraculously it only suffered a couple of minor scratches (same can't be said for my arm) which you really have to search for in order to notice.

I've only had my R2D2 since March 24th, only a few days past the 30 days :frown: I'm still covered under Motorola warranty! But when I took it to the store and explained that I HAD NOT dropped it, and that it just started doing this randomly, the guy was like "well it has this small scratch on the side (and the scratch itself is so microscopic its laughable) and if we were to send it in to be replaced then they would take a picture of the scratch for proof that the damage was your fault and charge you $400." He told me if I didn't want to get charged $400 that I needed to file an insurance claim and pay $100...this of course made me livid considering that this isn't even damage that I caused! If I had caused it then i would gladly pay the $100 because it would be my fault, this however is not.

Whaaat.... that smells like a load of BS (on the part of whoever told you that at the VZW store). I'd say try another store or ask to speak with a manager or something. I haven't had to file a warranty or insurance claim with my D2 (knock on wood), but it seems absurd and inaccurate to me that they'd charge you for replacing what is obviously an internal failure with the device. Even a factory refurbished unit should be free of charge, if it's within a year from original date of purchase.

Khiraji thank you! that's a big relief to hear, I was starting to worry that I was going to get that no matter where I went. I plan on going to the verizon store at home after finals (much better store) so hopefully they'll actually be cooperative with me. Luckily 3/4 of my phone I can still see so I can kinda use it alright lol..my only worry now is that since they've stopped selling the R2D2s I won't be able to get another one :(

..why? It's not broke. I realize it sucks but the device is fully functional. I dont think even insurance will give you a replacement for such a trivial issue.

Didn't realize you got it so recently.

I'm sure they will ship you a CLNR R2D2.
