Why are so many apps running?

When I go to close programs using advance task killer I see so many apps running that I have not opened. How come?

I'm on my droid so I can't give you a link but if you google "do not worry about apps running in the background" you will get a Dr link with the answer. And you'll also see why you don't need a task killer.
