Why are the command buttons hidden in the Camera app?

When I open the Camera app on my Nexus, the Back/Home/Settings buttons disappear. They're still functional - if I touch where they "should" be, they perform their expected function, and (as far as I know) this is the only way to exit the Camera app short of restarting my phone. Does anyone know why the buttons are hidden?

Are you sure you just can't hit the back or home buttons to exit the camera app??

I can, but the icons turn into tiny dots, so I have to remember which is which.
