Why aren't there any good Google Voice Apps?

I just don't get it. One of the best things about Google Voice is that it can forward numbers to your cell, home, work, or any other number you want. But there is no app that easily allows you to quickly change this simple setting.

When I'm at home, I have GV forward calls to my home phone. But everytime I leave home, I have to fire up the GV app, go into settings, choose "phone", then check the box that forwards to my cell phone. You would think by now someone would have made an app or widget that allows you to do this quickly.

And someday, maybe they'll come up with some kind of location service that automatically forwards calls to home when it senses your cell phone is at home and then change over to cell phone as your phone leaves your home. I can only dream of that day.....

Why not just have it forward calls to all three phones?

Because my home phone's answering machine picks up after 4 rings! And sometimes 2 rings when there are other un-heard messages. Not everyone has my Google number and lots of old friends still call my home phone direct.

I recall running across a guide to getting this set up. It wasn't a simple option toggle or anything but it's apparently possible if you really want it. I'll post a URL if I run across it again.

I would love to see that if you ever find it. I was researching the app "Locale", but it can't do Google Voice change number function, although it can do lots of things automatically based on location.

THANK YOU! Those instructions seem a bit complex for me, but there's also a link to a free app that does this. I just downloaded it and will test it out today. But I'm not sure how accurate this "triangulation" method works. If I had the brains, I would just buy Locale and make it so when it's hooked up to my Wifi SSID it would forward calls to my home and at all other times to my cell. But I think that may be beyond my capabilities.

Thanks again!

This is an update to this post. Thanks to harrellj, I downloaded "Google Voice Locations" and been testing it for more than a week now. IT IS FRIGGIN AWESOME!!!dancedroid This is now one of my favorite apps on my phone due to it's convenience. And it's free.

Basically, when I'm at home (identified by GPS location), all my calls to my Google Voice number ring my home phone. When I leave my home (leave my home GPS location), all calls to my GV number ring my cell phone. When I get to work, all calls to GV ring my work phone. Automatically. I don't have to go and set forwarding on the GV webpage manually anymore.

It takes about 5-10 minutes for the location changes. This frequency can't be changed.

This app has worked flawlessly with my Droid 1 - with 2.2 and rooted (worked fine when it wasn't rooted as well). Some comments on the market app page say this didn't work for them on the Droid, but I had no problems. Kudos to the developer of this great app.

well the update that google voice recently gave comes with widgets that let you do just this =]

Actually, it doesn't. And I was very disappointed that it didn't. It just allows you to quickly change how your Droid dials out (using GV or not - and you could already do this by the Google Toggle shortcut), quickly send text, tell it to block all calls, and open the GV app (which is an icon anyways). I really don't see why people are happy about this crappy widget.

One of the things GV originally was known for was to use one number and have it follow you everywhere. And yet there is no quick way to change this setting. Only way is to open the browser and click away to settings.

That's why this GPS based way of changing forwarding numbers is an awesome app. At least for my needs.
