Why can I only turn my phone on silent ...

I had this problem too.

You need to go into UD Settings-->User Interface and tweak the notification power widget buttons to Sound/Vibrate/Silent. That gave me silent mode back on my volume rocker.

I had this problem too.

What do your Sound settings look like? I've got Vibrate=Only in Silent mode and a check mark in "Silent state."
