Why can't I access files when I plug my Moto Z into PC?

I'm trying to add & remove videos & pictures from my Moto Z Force to/ from my Win10 PC. When I plug the phone into the USB port it shows up like a normal device like an ext. hard-drive. (it shows XT1650. is there a way to change that to a custom name?) But when I click on it there is nothing inside, no folders or anything. I recently did the same thing with my Kindle Fire & it was super easy. I plugged it in & saw the internal files then I could easily transfer videos to & from it.
Thanks!

With newer phones and newer versions on Android you have to select what you want the phone to do when you connect it. Open the Notification panel and you should see something like "USB Charging Tap To Change...". Tap that and select MTP to use the phone as a media device. Then you should see the phones storage from your PC. It's a security feature Google built into newer versions of Android.

Also, check out the File Manager app that's preinstalled on your phone. It has options for manage files via WiFi from a laptop so you don't have to plug in a USB cable. Once it's all setup you should be able to see the phones storage via a wifi connection and copy files back & forth that way.

Thanks for helping... I went to Settings the Notifications & I do not see anything like "USB Charging Tap To Charge". There is mobile & tethering but it doesn't say anything about USB. I'd like top learn about file transferring via BT & wifi but I'm more interested in why I cany get it to work while plugged in.

Check the Notification panel when the phone is plugged into your computer. That's where the option is you have to tap and change.

Once connected to your computer pull down the notification panel. Tap the USB Charging....Or similarly worded option. The you should see a screen similar to this, and select MTP.
