I'm a total droid newbie, determined to learn this phone. Why would I ever turn on Wifi if I have a 3g or 4g signal?
Thanks.

Faster than 3g (in most cases), doesn't impact your data plan (if you're not on an old unlimited plan), allows you to access your local network resources (media servers, printers, etc), uses less battery than 4g.

Wifi is faster than 3g. It also uses less battery than 4g radio.

Otherwise 4g is faster, but if you didn't get grandfathered into unlimited data, you'd want wifi

If you're downloading LARGE files and you don't have unlimited data, then you definitley want to use wi-fi instead of 3g/4g. Also, chances are, if you're not getting a 4g signal, downloading can be much faster using wi-fi.

If you have a good wifi signal you can turn off data (2g, 3g, 4g), still have a fast connection, and save lots of battery, especially if you are in a low signal area.

Thanks to all of you. I suspected it might be better for battery... but had no idea wifi was faster than 3g, that it incurred no data use, or that I could access my home network (pc files and printer). Great to know.

Battery use also depends on your signal strength. A weak wifi signal will use more power. However all things being equal wifi is the way to go.

That being said I rarely have wifi on. I don't have it at home, and most places that have wifi seem to have crippled versions so I can't access stuff like the Market or search or even apps like Bettr Flickr.

Yeah, I never use public WiFi. Don't trust it. I use my secure WiFi at home, but otherwise I stick to 3g/4g.

Use wifi almost exclusively at home and even at lunch if available. I am at .146gig and got the bionic on release date, could be over a gig now and be safe not to go over my 2gig plan.

I do not have unlimited and was worried about data usage. So I under used to prove I could conserve. Even if I get to just under 3 gig it is only ten more bucks so Wifi is a savior.

McDonalds free wifi rocks by the way...use out in parking lot sometimes for quick large uploads. Doesn't seem to block any major sites either.

I won't beat on a dead horse here, but here are my speed examples, ran using Speakeasy speed test.

On 3g I've gotten between.5 to 1.6ish Mbps, 12.4 Mbps on my Comcast broadband and anywhere between 8 to a WHOOPING 37 Mbps on my 4g. All those speeds were on upload via my Bionic.

I'm not listing this for a speed test forum, but just an example why you should connect wifi when you can.
