Widget unload failure

I'm a relatively new Droid user. It is a "Motorola Droid" from Verizon. I had an app named WiFi On/Off installed. When I received a notification that thewre was an update available, I initiated the download of the update. It failed to install, but appeared to have partially installed so that it no longer worked. It would not restart the download/install process. I tried to unload the app/widget and that failed too.

I presently have a WiFi On/Off icon that does not work on my desktop, along with a message about the failure. So, 2 things that I cannot figure out how to remove.

I checked installed apps, and it is not there, but it is on my desktop still.

I searched the net and could not find a similar situation.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Any widget (installed or not) on the screen gets removed the same way, press and hold on it until you get a trash can icon on the bottom of the screen and drag the widget to the trash.
