Wifi not staying on when screen is off

I'm having the problem of my wifi not staying on when I have the screen off. I'm missing a lot of notifications because of this. When I turn the screen on it takes a moment for the wifi symbol to reappear and shortly after I get any message or email notifications that I should have already received. Anyone else having this problem or know of a remedy?? Running CM6 of course.

Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi Settings > Menu softkey > Advanced > Wi-Fi Sleep Policy > Never/Never when plugged in
