Wifi on the "X"

While in the Wifi mode and providing that link for your laptop or whatever, I know that you can't recieve phone calls but can you recieve and send text messages.

I'm thinking of switching from the original Droid to the Droid X so as to gain the hot spot for use in my laptop and eliminate the usb internet card and the extra cost.
