Start up 4G being the important term. It will take a few years to migrate to the new technology, so unless you live or spend large amounts of time in LA, Vegas, or one of the other test cities, there's no point in stressing too much about it.
4G really isn't that far out for USB modems and PCMCIA cards, but for smartphones, it may be a while, cuz there really isn't a need for crazy speen on a handheld...
On September 20, 2007, Verizon Wireless announced that it plans a joint effort with the Vodafone Group to transition its networks to the 4G standard LTE. On December 9, 2008, Verizon Wireless announced that they intend to build and begin to roll out an LTE network by the end of 2009. Since then, Verizon Wireless has said that they will start their rollout by the end of 2010.
so if the droid doesnt have the necessary hardware to run 4g than im pretty sure no other phone on verizon can what is verizon gonna do to fix it replace all the incapable phones for free cause that would be a real big problem when it comes and no phones work on it!

I dont see why they would turn off their current towers and switch to only 4g. I'm not sure of the signal details but assuming it would cut everyone off without 4g that would be the death of Verizon wouldnt it? :icon_ banana:
The 4G cut over will be like the cut over from Analog to Digital they both coexisted for years before analog was completely eliminated. 3G and 4G or LTE will coexist on the network until the entire network is converted and then you will be required to switch to a 4G capable device.
I know a lot of you don't even remember analog cellular but it did exist.
