Wiping for ROM updates?

I tried asking this in the Eclipse thread and another one a few times, but no one ever answered...hoping for better luck here.

So I know its always recommended to wipe between ROM flashes, but is the same true for updates? Like from Eclipse 1.1 to 1.3 or whatever they're on now? And if it is, is there a way to save everything exactly between an upgrade? Would a nandroid backup work between ROM versions? Thanks in advance!

Always follow what the developer recommends. But normally a wipe is not needed when updating. I usually just wipe dalvik and regular cache but never data. You can use titaniumbackup to backup apps and data when switching roms.

Yeah, I tried to find anything specifying the answer to this, but there isn't really. He only says if you're installing it for the first time you don't need other versions, only the latest.
