If there was a phone released that allow you to upgrade the RAM, processor, camera, or other hardware, would you buy one? This idea struck me this morning. Say they sell different base models and you go from there or something. Seeing as this will never happen because phone companies would lose revenue if you could buy upgrades instead of buying a new phone.

You just answered you own question...yes of course. Because it would be cheaper but they won't do that because companies will loose money because no one is buying "new" phones from them.

I would not buy the first ones. When PCs clones were first available compatability issues were a serious problem. By 2000 you could easily buy components and build your own. Phones could reach that point but the first ones would be difficult to get working correctly most likely.

They dont really lose money... they just don't make as much. That's the problem with the biz mentality... if you don't maximize your profits that means you're losing money. How do you lose what you don't already have? In our society simply making money isn't good enough. I know there are many ways of looking at this... this is just one.

Phone hardware/circuitry is designed to be as compact as possible. Unless all components were standardized in size (which is unrealistic) it would be pretty hard to be able to swap hardware without having a brick size device. Not to mention the actual hardware modification wouldn't be as simple as what it is on a PC.
