Droid incrdible root

I don't know anything bout my Droid besides the basic functions I want to root it but everyone I ask says I have to downgrade but no one to give step by step instructions and I don't want to mess my phone up and after I downgrade I need help rooting it much appreciated

Let's start at the beginning. What version of Android are you currently running? Incredible or Incredible 2?
