Here's a head-scratcher for your Friday morning. The Huawei Watch just showed up for pre-order on Amazon, but it's crazy expensive compared to other smartwatches. The sale price of Huawei's foray into the world of wearables actually starts at the same overly expensive level as the Apple Watch: $349.99. The price only gets worse from there and eventually balloons to $799.99 for the most expensive version.

We aren't sure what to make of these crazy prices. In fact, we have a sidebar story to share that Huawei and the other smartwatch OEMs might want to pay attention to. New market research indicates that consumer interest in wearable computing devices is already waning. The study found that fitness bands had the biggest drop in popularity.

The study concluded that consumers simply want more features out of their wearables than just fancy fitness capabilities. That means that if the smartwatch makers can actually start building even more functionality into their devices, they might be able to get broader appeal, but for now, it doesn't look like a smart market to be in. ~ ArgusInsights

For clarity, here's Amazon's description of the Huawei Watch:
  • 1.4" Full Circle AMOLED display with scratch resistant sapphire glass and stainless steel body
  • Compatible with most devices with an iOS 8.2 or Android 4.3 or later operating system
  • Get notifications and alerts for calls, texts, and apps with over 4000 Android Wear apps to choose from
  • Over 40 preinstalled watch faces and easily swappable bands for your own unique style
  • Fitness tracking with enhanced heart rate monitor and sensors to track running, walking, and more

Sapphire glass is why it's so expensive. Wonder how waterproof it is...

I think it's the best looking smart watch to date(the black version) I'll wait till it drops below 100$ to consider getting one.

I will never consider a watch with tick marks. Ever. I don't like them on normal watches in most cases and i despise them on e-watchs...

Not sure about the entry-level price - still one of the best looking watches IMO.

As for the higher prices, you get more "bling" to make it look like a more premium watch. I don't think those prices are terribly out of line, but if you're going to spend that on a watch I don't understand why you wouldn't get an actual name-brand watch that says you have class rather than being a nerd with too much money.

Also, many premium brand watchmakers are coming out with smartwatch versions, which the high-end Huaweii is supposed to compete with. But to me, it would have to have killer features (which it really doesn't) beyond the premium bands to compete.

Link is dead, search turns up nothing resembling the op.

And as for the prices,

Amazon took it down because in it's description it said that it works with iPhone but it really doesn't

Nice looking watch, looks good on the computer but won't be on my arm at that price. Let's see how much that moto 360 (2) will be.

Yeah... I had a feeling something like that might happen. That's why I got a screencap directly from the Amazon page myself while it was up, so you guys could see the prices.

They have a 23-k gold plated one for $1200...Only supposed to be 500 available, so better act fast! :D
